How NFC Technology Works: A Simple Guide

March 1, 20264 min read

NFC powers contactless payments, transit cards, and now business cards. Here's a simple explanation of the technology behind it.

What Is NFC?

NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It's a wireless technology that allows two devices to exchange data when they're brought within about 4 centimeters of each other. You use NFC every time you tap your phone to pay or use a metro card.

How NFC Business Cards Work

An NFC business card contains a tiny chip and antenna embedded inside the card. Here's what happens when someone taps it:

1. The tap: You hold your NFC card against someone's smartphone

2. Power transfer: The phone's NFC reader powers the card's chip wirelessly (no battery needed)

3. Data exchange: The chip sends a URL to the phone

4. Browser opens: The phone automatically opens your 95dot profile in the browser

5. Profile displayed: The person sees your complete digital profile

The entire process takes less than 1 second.

Which Phones Support NFC?

Almost all modern smartphones support NFC:

  • iPhone: iPhone 7 and newer (iOS 14+)
  • Android: Most Android phones from 2015 onwards
  • Samsung: All Galaxy S and Note series

For phones without NFC, our cards also include a QR code as a fallback.

Security of NFC

NFC is inherently secure because:

  • Short range: You must physically tap the card — no remote reading
  • One-way: The card only sends a URL, it can't read data from the phone
  • No personal data: The chip contains only a web link, not your actual information
  • Encrypted URLs: Our links include security tokens to prevent tampering

Common Questions

Q: Can someone clone my NFC card?

A: Our NFC chips use unique IDs that are factory-locked and cannot be duplicated.

Q: Does NFC drain my phone battery?

A: No. The NFC interaction is so brief it has virtually zero impact on battery life.

Q: Does it work through phone cases?

A: Yes! NFC works through most phone cases, including thick protective cases.

The Future of NFC

NFC technology is expanding rapidly. From hotel room keys to medical bracelets to smart product packaging, NFC is becoming the universal standard for tap-to-interact experiences. Your NFC business card puts you at the forefront of this technology.
